THE NEW BLACK combine good old fashioned Rock with larger than life riffs to conquer arenas and will appeal to the crowds on the fence between Rock and Metal with a bit of nostalgia for the heydays of PANTERA, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, and good old grungers like SOUNDGARDEN to name just a few. Does it come as any wonder they’ve been the support for the German leg of ALTER BRIDGE’s tour or even opened for AC/DC? Well, not really. They’ve also shared stage with VOLBEAT and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and played most of the major festivals out there.
The album contains 12 full-on tracks with relentless onslaught of high-octane burst of energy, on “Digi Pak” version of the album their fans will be treated to one extra track (‘Soon’). They are all denominated by all I’ve already mentioned with little differences or surprises between each. The highlight for me would be penultimate songs ‘Last Chance To Throw Dirt’, though part of my liking this song is due to its echo of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE fused together with FAITH NO MORE, the latter especially when regarding singing at times, but the point is - there is some difference to be detected here from the homogeneous overall sound of the LP.
There are bands that sound great fun both in their studio albums or live and you’d have hard time picking one over the other, and though ‘Better In Black’, the second album of these German rockers, does sound acceptable coming out from your music system, it’d still be much better experience to be listening to them in concert and it’ll outdo the home listening on all counts. I don’t think I would be there though or replay this album for my own enjoyment, as to my taste they offer very little diversity, are a bit of a throwback and mix of a lot that’s been heard before and already.
