Album Review

The three hours long concert record of TRANSATLANTIC is a fantastic present for a fan of the band and a curse for a random victim. Progressive Rock is quite a specific musical genre which fits not for each and every music lover. If you are into it – go for it, if not – run away!

TRANSATLANTIC was founded in 1999 by ex-SPOCK'S BEARD vocalist Neal Morse, THE FLOWER KINGS guitarist Roine Stolt, MARILLION bass guitarist Pete Trewavas and ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy. Within fourteen years of its existence the band released four studio albums and five live albums. The current band's album ‘Kaleidoscope’ won “Album of the Year“ at the third annual Progressive Music Awards. The release of the album and its success TRANSATLANTIC celebrated with a number of shows. They played two days in the raw in Tilburg and exactly those concert are to hear on this live-record. The sound is actually fantastic, just like in the studio. It is not a mixture of people screaming and music, but those two aspects are set apart, everything is balanced and combined fine.

If you ever heard the live-concerts, you might agree with me, that it is difficult to enjoy it if you wasn't there. You listen to other people cheering, singing along and disturbing the studio-atmosphere of the regular albums. On ‘KaLIVEoscope’, which is a lame word-game btw., you hear the musicians toilet-joking, laughing at their own jokes, improvising, what is more valuable, and of course playing. All in all it is a good live-record. Pretty interesting for fans of the band, especially for those, who were at those concerts. For them it would a great piece of memories. In the beginning of the record the musicians are talking about playing the “never-ending show“, that it would be a challenge for the public, as well as the challenge for the band itself. It is also a challenge for the listener, who's not into that kind of music. So if you normally enjoy 7-13-minutes guitar tracks, clear vocals and happy-sad rock ballads – this album may become a start for a great journey if you had no idea about TRANSATLANTIC before.
