THE RODEO IDIOT ENGINE seems like a complicated name for a band, but what is even more complicated is trying to wrap one’s head around the band’s insane Mathcore approach. Drawing on the psychotic buzz of bands like MESHUGGAH and the ‘stop n’ go’ pace of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, IDIOT ENGINE basically destroys ears with its ferocity. Rather than take the usual approach, they blend a bit of black metal in the music as well, toning the screams and shrieks to almost unbearable cries of pain that might be heard in the depressive black metal genre. So that makes the music all the more unsettling to get through. Tracks like ‘King Of Nowhere’ even sound like a black metal track with the constant hammering of the drums, rapidly aggressive riffs, and shrouded shouts that just make everything so unsettling. Then there are the more heavy technical tracks like ‘Crown Of Thorns’ that just jump all over the place non-stop with their Grindcore-esque speeds, sudden pauses, and then guitar solos that sound like they’re trying to pull off as many different notes as possible.
‘Fools Have Taken The Nave’, despite being heavy, is probably the slowest track of all as the band opts for lengthier chugs and more rhythm rather than just about fifty in a two second span. However, it is still distorted, ugly, and painful to hear. The only downside for IDIOT ENGINE’S debut is that ‘Fools Will Crush The Crown’ is it is far too short. Like a Grindcore album, the many tracks barely make it past the two minute mark, which makes for a very short album to listen to. Everything seems to go by too quickly. Plus, with such a heavy atmosphere going on - along with the band trying to accomplish its Mathcore / hardcore bits - the music just blasts away with plenty of repeated sections in other tracks. However, for those who don’t mind brief jolts of sound and like gritty, aggressive music that isn’t beautifully technical, like DREAM THEATER might be, but still pretty impressive, then IDIOT ENGINE may be just the dosage needed. Just stay away from mosh pits when these guys play. Highly methodical metal played on overdrive usually turns everyone into psychotics in there.
