Interview with:

SQY Rocking Team

SQY Rocking Team is a Dutch rockband that is known for its energetic liveshows. They have supported many famous international bands, like Deep Purple, Y & T, Europe and Motörhead. They're on the verge of bringing out a new DVD, which will officially be released in New York on June 21st. Fans can now already obtain their copy during live gigs or through the fanclub. Before their show in the rockcafe Jerry's in Veldhoven (NL) I had an interview with Harald and Martijn in their tourvan, which is pimped with their logo and thousands of concert- and party pictures.

Why did you choose the song "Get It Done" to record a videoclip for?
Harald:  It was on the advice of different people. Together with the song "NYC" we loved this song. Otherwise we wouldn't have put them as track 1 and 2 on our CD "Top Fuel Tendencies". We were notified by people in the working field who said that it would be good to do something more with these songs to get better exposure.

What is the song "Get It Done" about?
Harald:  It's about a person who works every day, from Monday 'til Friday. He's so bored about this so he's going to hang out the party animal at Friday night and only then life justs starts for him. But on Monday he has to go to work again and so this whole ritual starts all over again. The essence of the story is that you can only do something about it yourself. So, as said in the lyrics: "Crawl up as fast as you can. Don't let it linger. Be a man!" So don't waste your life, do something about it!

How did you get the idea to let people, known and unknown, play in this videoclip?
Martijn:  I can't remember any more who had this idea, but as we were brainstorming we came up with this. I think it isn't a very original idea. It has already been done before. We did it to give it some more knowledge out of different angles of incidence. Like people from the metal scene, but also people who would otherwise not see this clip who have now the opportunity to watch it. And I don't think people would like it to see only our heads, haha.
Harald:  Yes, we're not that handsome indeed. There are some more eccentric people to distract the viewers off our heads, haha.
Martijn:  And it's fun to do this with befriended people and with bands we actually don't know from another genre (like Asraï on the pictures below, red.)

Will you be seen in your videoclip yourselves?
Martijn:  Not yet, we haven't recorded ourselves yet. The thought is to film ourselves during the chorus, but we don't have a precise idea of how to do that. Maybe we'll get some nice ideas tonight, after some cans of beer.

Did you encounter any problems until now?
Harald:  No, not really. We were quite surprised that a lot of people immediately said "yes" . We hadn't expected that, especially from the people out of the metal and gothic scene. It was totally without engagement. They were all very enthusiastic and immediately reserved some time for us.
Martijn: But we were a little bit disappointed Princess Máxima wouldn't cooperate. She said she didn't have enough time, haha. And today we asked the singer of Boston, but now we heard that he had just passed away. So some people don't stick to their appointments, which is quite disappointing, haha.

There is also another videoclip, right?
Harald:  "Get It Done" is merely the "serious" clip (laughs). If you want to keep people captivated, you should also do something more juicy. Two years ago we went on tour with the band Erocktica, which is a somewhat neater version of Rockbitch. Pink Snow, the female singer wanted to cooperate with us and she recorded the videoclip for "NYC" in New York City. It will be brought out simultaneously with "Get It Done". We didn't join her in New York. She recorded this video herself. It's going to be a somewhat dirty videoclip. We just must do that, because when we put this clip on Youtube, we'll have about 3 million viewers, haha.

How are the reactions from the media so far?
Harald:  We're still working on that. First the videoclips have to be made and when everybody says it's okay, then it will be played. You'll often notice, if a videoclip is being made in the absence of a "pusher" or "plugger" it's going to be difficult. In contrary to our previous videoclips we have someone who is helping us with that and he said we had to draw our attention to these two songs to make a videoclip of. Now I'm 35 years old. When we'll wait a few years longer, after all that beer, I'll look as Martijn looks now, haha!

Did you attend some videorecordings from the guest artists?
Martijn:  I visited the first one, with Japanse Jantje. That was very nice to do. For the rest we visited the recordings by turns to keep track of them. We cannot attend every recording together. People also need to go to work, you know?

How much influence do you have in the recording process?
Harald:  In the end we're responsible, but we let a lot depend on the creativity of others. We said to Natascha (van Poppel, director/photographer, red.) and Michel Jolie (editor, red.) that they will be the leading forces and whenever necessary we'll add some of our own input. So far they have had really nice ideas and they're going to edit a format, that means they’re going to mix out the verses.
Martijn:  On purpose we chose to also let the participating people think along in order not to limit anyone, because that would be a shame. There were some characteristic people who had some really nice ideas. During filming quite some new ideas were born.

Will there be a contest for the fans?
Martijn:  We are still figuring out what to do with it, for example we’re thinking of letting people guess who are playing in our videoclip. We want to do something interactive on our website with the fans, also to draw more viewers.

What will be the content of the DVD?
Martijn:  At least the two videoclips of course. Maybe there will be some alternative versions with bloopers. According to Michel we already have a lot of bloopers. Furtheron there will be a "making of" with some comment from us, some picture work and perhaps some comments by the makers. And maybe some poster stuff and some things from the past.

Thanks a lot for this interview guys, it was very amusing talking with you!
