Album Review

THREE DAYS GRACE was founded 1992 in Canada, at first under the name GROUNDSWELL. They disbanded pretty soon and rejoined in 1997, then as THREE DAYS GRACE. Their debut album, ‘Three Days Grace’ was released in 2003, which gained a lot of attention, hence four singles were released. In 2006, ‘One-X’ followed, lyrically some songs dealt with Adam Gontier’s addiction to pain killers. Tours with bands such as 3 DOORS DOWN or BREAKING BENJAMIN followed, and now they’ve just released their newest record, ‘Life Starts Now’. In the meanwhile, Adam Gontier also recorded the song ‘I don’t care’ together with APOCALYPTICA.

The album sets in with ‘Bitter Taste’, a straight-forward rock song with clean vocals and an intense chorus, a powerful beginning. ‘Break’ continues somehow with a certain groove, some harsher singing, small technical elements and in some way anthem-like. Onward, ‘World So Cold’ slows down and consists of some nice melodic inflexions. After the really energetic and strong beginning, ‘Lost in you’ veers into the same direction as his antecessor, a rock ballad with some acoustic guitar elements. ‘The Good Life’ then speeds up again and includes once again a sing along chorus and a grooving prevailing mood.

Furthermore, ‘No More’ slows down again, whilst ‘Last to Know’ continues with a piano accompanied vocal duet, marking the, until then, slowest, most emotional song. ‘Someone Who Cares’ then again continues faster, serving a nice interplay between slower and stronger parts, also including a few synthetic components. Over and above, ‘Bully’ comprises a few minor parts and gains speed in the middle-part. ‘Without you’ again veers towards a ballad, whereas ‘Goin’ Down’ begins in an interesting, electronic way. In turn, this song grooves along and is a symbiosis of slower and faster parts, although the correlation between down and drown is a bit flat. The last song and at the same time title-giving track ‘Life Starts Now’ does not operate as a fast last dance, but once again rather steady.

All in all, ‘Life Starts Now’ is a felicitous record, including many fast-forwarded songs and at the same time lots of slower songs. As I do not know the predecessors, forgive me my lack of comparison. Yet I, personally, would have preferred some faster songs, a few of the rather slow songs might get boring after a while.
