Album Review

THE SHIVER is an alternative rock outfit from Italy, founded in 2005 by Faith and Finch, the vocalist and the drummer of the formation, respectively. In 2007, the band signed a contract with UK Division Records and in 2008 it recorded the debut album ‘Inside’. After numerous gigs in Italy and the tour in the UK, THE SHIVER attracted the attention of different magazines and webzines and of course fans of the genre. Now it comes with the second work the title of which, ‘A New Horizon’, defines rather clear changes in the band’s music that has become more qualitative and dynamic.

‘In Obscurity’, the first song on the CD, is a bit slow and measured comparing to the following tracks but it already drops a hint of what we can find on the album and contains all the significant elements of the style. The second piece, ‘Crushing Down’, is more powerful and pushing intensifies the sonic attack onto the listener. The vocals getting more desperate in combination with the energetic music fully entraps you cutting off a path of retreat. So you start following the melody to make a way through the variety of sounds and guessing what to expect from the next compositions.

‘Empty People, Empty Words’ is a rather commercial song and the best one on the album that is notable for its catchy chorus and cheerful, tuneful yet vigorous music, slightly calm at the beginning which then falls upon the listener with full force. The piano passages in ‘The Fragile Sound’ produce a consolidative impression but it’s just an illusion and indeed the song is written in the same key as the previous ones. Only the sixth track ‘Though This Cold Water’ peaceful and melodic allows you to relax a bit and to prepare your consciousness for the second half of the CD which brings the whole avalanche of various sounds sometimes not combined with each other  but nevertheless interesting to listen to.

In general, ‘A New Horizon’ is a good work of a promising young band. The material presented on the album pleases with its diversity and the songs changing one another in an intricate sequence simply can’t make you get bored.
