Album Review

PHALLUS DEI was founded in 1988 as a project of Oliver St. Lingman who named the band after the famous album by AMON DÜÜL II. In 1991, the formation released the first CD ‘Pontifex Maximus’ and after a successful tour with SIGILLUM S, Lingman’s undertaking increased to a trio. In 1993, PHALLUS DEI recorded the album ‘Cyberflesh’ with the help of Joris Huijbregts who joined the band a year later and left it in 1995. So the formation became a trio again and continued to experiment with the sound, then the musicians implemented all their ideas in the latest work called ‘A Day in the Life of Brian Wilson’.

The first thing that arrests one’s attention straight away is the atmosphere of the CD which flows imperceptibly between the songs and a listener follows Brian Wilson’s day from the beginning to the end. It goes without saying that the album starts with the song entitled ‘Prologue: Dawn’, a melodic and soothing intro that gives you a strong impression of the slowly rising sun. The next two compositions just intensify that feeling added some new colours to the palette but actually the result is rather diverse because long and calming tracks can easily turn into something dreary and drowsy. However on the album there prevails a fine combination of slightly aloof vocals, temperate guitars and electronics, supplemented with ambient sounds besides some faint sense of industrial elements can be found on the second half of ‘Boiler Room Party’.

To sum it all up, ‘A Day in the Life of Brian Wilson’ is a deep and rich work of talented people, yet with all its sonic experiments it’s mostly oriented on the fans of the style.
