Album Review

German band STROMBLE FIX originally started in 1990 but after the split in 1994 it was reformed only in 2002. Afterwards there followed a series of releases including the latest effort entitled ‘The Early Years’ mostly because it features in addition songs from the band’s first, self-released albums. The new CD opens with a rather promising, energetic with boisterous guitars and peculiar vocals which may seem interesting but still not too impressive. However the voice manages to set off the melodies quite well and that shortcoming is getting less apparent.

Speaking about the music in general it displays all significant features of post-punk with its powerful, assertive aura where the simplicity even a bit artificial but unobtrusive combines with solid rhythm yet some looseness occurs like in ‘Nothing’ for example. Maybe, the band went too far with musical expressiveness, originality and some tracks remind a bright patchwork blanket however it’s just a matter of taste and style. The lyrics also reflect the best traditions of the genre so the provocative, incentive or somewhat ironic songs are intended to strike a listener.

Of course, there are a couple of compositions I’d like to mark out, namely ‘Icicle Song’ and ‘Thrill’. The former pleases with lightness and frailty while the latter is really calm and gives an opportunity to relax after the sonic attack of the previous tracks. Closer the end of the CD the vocals also become clearer and more applicable and the songs themselves become shorter. All in all, ‘The Early Years’ total length of which is about an hour includes 15 interesting and diverse tracks but it’s mostly meant for fans of the style.
