Album Review
There is some very cool and original dark wave emerging from Italy at the minute and SPIRAL69 are no exception. Fusing piano, guitar, violin and drums the band led by Riccardo Sabetti creates a dark and haunting sound which is still permeated by the pop sensibilities of the 1980s. Songs like ‘Bleeding Through’, ‘Beautiful Lie’ and ‘Berlin’ hang in the air between the likes of JOY DIVISION and John Cale with their penetrating minor chords and anguished vocals. Yet other tracks like ‘The Girl Who Dances Alone At The Disco’, ‘Love Is For Losers’ and ‘Best Porno’ feel more upbeat and tap into the spirits of THE CURE and SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES with danceable rhythms and catchy pop hooks that you can’t help but love.
Where the album falls down though is in the rather tinny production which takes the edge of the bass and violin too much, so that the bottom end of the sound is swept up in the piano and guitar melodies. On some of the songs though this isn’t too noticeable, and for the most part the album’s mix is pretty spot on. SPIRAL69 have crafted a fine collection of songs here and their song-writing formula feels fresh and exciting. Each song has both single and live performance possibilities, which makes a change from a lot of bands who writes singles which they’d struggle with live. While the band have a lot of potential for some real international success, a little more time behind the mixing desk would still be of benefit to them.
