29th March 2006
Analogue Brain and Boundlezz

This evening should become something special for ‘Analogue Brain’. It was their first ever live performance and so the band signed from the ‘Out of Line’ label was pretty nervous before the show. But there was no reason to be. Their sound check worked pretty well, they got rid of all the feedbacks and there were quite a few people showing up. It was probably a good idea to play during a Wednesday when the Kulturfabrik was not collecting any entrance fee. Additionally a lot of friends of both bands showed up and so it only could become a good evening.

Boundlezz

‘Boundlezz’ is a quite new project existing since end of 2004 consisting of usually four members: Frank (vocals/lyrics), Panida (backing vocals), Dirk (production, programming, keyboards) and Nic (production, programming, keyboards). Unfortunately all band members were somewhat ill that day. Panida even that much that she could not be on stage with the rest of the band. The band members worked in different musical projects before and there different interests are now combined in this new project. So you even can listen to sounds you usually do not expect hearing from an electronic band. http://www.boundlessband.de/

Music
The sound of ‚Boundlezz’ spreads from trance and spherical sounds to catchy beats and gentle harmonic sounds. Comparisons with ‘Mesh’, ‘De/Vision’ or ‘Seabound’ cannot be dismissed. To the diversified sounds the harmonic and charismatic chant of Frank is mixed. No song is like the other and all are touching different facets of the music spectrum. Unfortunately the band had to fight some technical problems during their show. The microphone stopped working several times and so the songs got interrupted several times. Afterwards it took a while until Frank was into them again. But all took it with humour and the band got its well deserved applause.

Performance
When Frank entered the stage in white pants and black leather jacket he reminds a bit of Dave Gahan end of the 80ies. But that comparison is soon forgotten when he started singing with his very charismatic voice. His band mates stood besides him behind their keyboard desks giving their best to produce a good sound... even though most of the sound came from MD as it is quite common in that field of music. Surely Panida was missing on stage – she would have added a lot to the show through to her female presence. Nevertheless it was a nice start of that evening.

Analogue Brain

Frank and Chris and another member formed a new electro project in the year 2000 which split up through to different reasons after only six months. After that split Frank and Chris continued making music and produced and album under the band name ‘Ton’. Besides that, Dirk was working in his own studio and produced songs under the synonym ‘Cy-Tec’. In March 2002 the three guys met accidentally in an electro-club where they decided to work together under the name ‘Analogue Brain’. The first song they wanted to produce should have been a remix. They chose the classic ‘warm Leatherette’ by ‘The Normal’ because this song was perfect for remixing. In only a few weeks three remixes of this song saw the light of day. With the help of fortune, Dependent-records boss Stefan Herwig got attention of these remixes and released the ‘Metal-mix’ in the third part of his ‘Septic’ compilation. Also other bands gave their attention to the band and so ‘Analogue Brain’ had the chance to mix other well-known bands like ‘Suicide Commando’, ‘Icon of Coil’ or ‘[:SITD:].
Convinced by their demo CD, Leipzig label ‘Out of Line’ signed the band and first released the track ‘Fly in an Amber’ on their label compilation ‘Machineries of Joy III’. After one more sampler addition, the band released their debut album ‘Electroshock’ on 4th July 2005. Since beginning of the year 2006 also live keyboard player Mario Michel belongs to the band line-up. ‘Analogue Brain’ are Frank Stienen (vocals, synths), Dirk Paepen (synths, programming) and Mario Michel (synths, programming). http://www.analoguebrain.de

Music
‘Analogue Brains’ are combining catchy melody arcs and cracking EBM-beats in their music. Several sings out of their album are made for the dance-floors: good examples are ‘Fly in an Amber’, ‘There must be one’ or ‘Alter Ego’. But also the softer tunes are not missed. For example ‘She said’ and ‘Versatile Violence’ create an atmospheric and emotional mood. Very typical for all songs and also for the live show was a slightly distorted voice with some reverberation effects on it. Melodies, melodic arrangements and the use of sequencers fall into place to the typical compact sound of ‘Analogue Brain’. Unfortunately also the headliner had to suffer from some technical problems like a not working microphone. But those difficulties could not overcome the enormous potential of the music.

Performance
A big green-white banner with the band-name was decorating the back of the stage. In front of it, it looked very technical with a huge keyboard construction on each side. The left one for Dirk even had some drum pads mounted on top so it was quite hard to see the musician behind it. Frank in front on the microphone still was a bit unsure. But that was not strange because it was the first ever live show for the band. And they did quite well. The audience – a lot of friends though – were convinced by the show too and danced and clapped a lot. ‘Analogue Brain’ also created a nice mood with their light show – added several scanners in the back. Their light was reflected by the added smoke – a typical electro band’s light show so to say ;) Well done guys and we’re looking forward the upcoming shows. CU on WGT!
