inextremo kompasszursonneThe new IN EXTREMO album ‘Kompass zur Sonne’ is released on May 8, 2020, via Vertigo/ Universal Music. From an acoustic trio to one of the most successful German Rock bands. From an idea, hard work, unwavering belief to several top 10 and three No. 1 albums. To sold-out tours, quaking castles and most loyal fans all over the world. From the latest album ‘Kompass zur Sonne’ to an exciting milestone: 25 years IN EXTREMO!

For a fabulous quarter of a century, the band has been fascinating with their rousing energy, which - to perfection! - emerges from this very own mixture: Between historical influences and the mighty sound of their Metal guitars, between medieval instruments, folkloric-archaic as well as modern rhythms, sing-along anthems in German and vernacular language, between the purest full throttle and Goosebumps melodies emerges so much more than music. It is an atmosphere, a feeling, a connection that makes it as unique as it is successful.

Founded in 1995 by singer Michael Robert Rhein, who, as an enthusiastic visitor to medieval events, had the idea of looking for collaborators for an acoustic ensemble. He found that and together they brought the music from this time to life with medieval cover versions on historical instruments. The first recordings followed in 1996 in the form of ‘In Extremo’, a first music cassette for self-distribution. In addition to this project, there was also a Rock band, and the attempt to combine the two appealed to musicians and audiences alike.

So little by little came together what obviously belonged together, and was initially heard on two tracks from the following album, now known as ‘Die Goldene’ (1997). The two formations moved closer and closer together and in April 1998 there was the first concert in complete IN EXTREMO line-up. At the same time the rather acoustic ‘Hameln’ (1998) was released, but this restless and diverse creativity soon drew the band’s attention to Indie labels. In the same year the Rock album ‘Weckt die Toten’ and the live album ‘Die Verrückten sind in der Stadt’ were released with the medieval program.

The breakthrough finally began shortly before the new millennium: The band signed with Major label Universal Music. ‘Verehrt und angespien’ (1999) rose to a sensational 11th place on the German album charts. The ‘Sünder ohne Zügel’ that followed in 2001 finally signified the real breakthrough, not least because of the first own songs that could be heard on it. The septet consistently followed this self-compositional path to ‘7’ (2003) and ‘Mein rasend Herz’ (2005), which included the song ‘Liam’, which reached third position at the “Bundesvision Song Contest” and a significantly increasing one Public interest was rewarded.

Almost alternately, live and studio albums such as ‘Sängerkrieg’ (2008) were released which took on the prevailing casting show craze and led the band to the top position on the album charts for the first time and was accompanied by new No. 1 placement with ‘Sterneneisen’ (2011) and ‘Kunstraub’ (2013) in second place. For the 20th anniversary came the extensive boxset retrospective ‘XX’ in 2015, the best-of-compilation ‘40 wahre Lieder’ in 2017 and ‘Quid Pro Quo’ in between, which went straight to number 1 in 2016 and spent 15 weeks in the charts held, followed by the associated live recording called ‘Quid Pro Quo Live’.

The new album ‘Kompass zur Sonne’ is published as a standard CD and on vinyl (double LP at 180 g) as well as a “Deluxe Edition” in a hardcover book with two additional tracks and as a “Fan Box” (Deluxe Edition plus Merchandise items). The song ‘Troja’ was released as the first single on January 30th, just in time for the pre-order start for the new album. The video was shot in Berlin-Schöneweide under the direction of Jörn Heitmann (including RAMMSTEIN, DIE TOTEN HOSEN) and impresses with visually stunning social criticism.

The big birthday with fans, companions and friends is celebrated at least as visually, in terms of sound and pyro: New album, extensive tour and legendary castle tour dates in Germany and Switzerland. And fans can also look forward to some more surprises around the quarter century of their favourite band. IN EXTREMO is far from being “completed” - to the next 25!
