Review Flash

The music of JENANA can be described as solid and not very diverse alternative pop-rock, sometimes contemplative and melancholic, sometimes energetic, and is comparable to the sound of COLDPLAY and TOCOTRONIC. JENANA sounds like the first clumsy experiments of a garage rock band trying to grab hold in music business. Although this might sound harsh, there are thoroughly to be found good approaches in the musical composition. Despite that, the vocals are too weak for the music and are absorbed by music and rhythm throughout most of the songs on the album. This is the reason why the lyrics are in some parts hard to understand and appear washy. Some songs are in my opinion too long-winded and tend to remain monotone, without any variety in melody as well as lyrics. Because of this the music hardly has any recognition value, there is no “hit” or a catchy tune to be found. The only track that lets the listener become attentive is the dreamy piano track called ‘Marije’ about halfway through the album, which is out of the ordinary in a positive sense and reminds of the nostalgic vintage piano pieces of Yann Tiersen.

Conclusion: JENANA shows good approaches regarding the musical structure, however the vocals are strongly capable of development.
