Review Flash

OLD RUINS from Gelsenkirchen, Germany are not that old to begin with, the band was formed in 2019 but jokes aside: these people are serious! It took quite a while from their EP ‘Old Ruins’ that came out in 2020 to their full-length debut ‘Always Heading East’ but if you want to forge decent steel you will need fire and patience. OLD RUINS’ music is a full on attack on our hearing apparatus but they do not attack without style or finesse The vocals of singer Kraje are a mix between guttural growls and fiery screams and this syncrisis suits the overall structure and style of their compositions very well. Kraje shares riff duty with Ersin Kara, who solely focuses on the six strings, together they bless the willing audience with interchanging patterns of highly melodic soundscapes that over and over again get broken to pieces by the typical wall of sound segments that Black Metal is so fond of. Oliver Krajewski (bass) and Alexander Czernik (drums) are what I call the foundation, they are the backbone and base on which the sound is build and on which the whole structure stands (without proper rhythm there is no proper metal). I also think it is very cool that the lyrics are mainly inspired by the cult classic videogame Diablo.

Conclusion: If you dig dark atmospheric music and have a soft spot for Black Metal or videogames: check it out!
