Album Review

If a band like LETZTE INSTANZ announces to do an acoustic tour through various German churches then you surely can expect something very special and I took the chance to see that spectacle when they played in Bochum in February and was impressed to say the least. The closing concert of that tour took place at the Lucas church in Dresden and was recorded for a DVD release and this accompanying audio companion called ‘Weiße Reise’…

…and after a short ringing and loud applause they already start the journey with the words “Welcome to Paradise” and everyone knew it was time for ‘Kalter Glanz’ a song which was initially composed with the former singer Robin Sohn, but is very well performed by Holly. With ‘Tanz’ and the wonderful solemn ‘Unerreicht’ both from the 2006 release ‘Ins Licht’ they continue and at the end of ‘Unerreichbar’ you can hear the crowd singing the chorus. Well that’s what I call live feeling. One of my favourites ‘Jeden Morgen’ was chosen to be the next and even though I have to admit that I had some problems to hear the song with another voice at first I came to love this one as well, especially the live version of it. Back to ‘Ins Licht’ with the song ‘Ohne Dich’ which is dedicated to a special person by Holly. A heart-piercing melancholy unfolds in the venue with the song which is not least due to the brittle arrangement and Holly’s outstanding emotional chant. ‘Du & Ich’ increases the tempo again and is more rhythmic; in the background, the audience claps along to it. At that time ‘Das weisse Lied’ still was a newer song and had its live premier at the tour; and fragile like glass, a piano melody heralds the start of that dreamy song to be followed by another highlight of mine ‘Für Immer und Ewig’ and during the chorus, you just have to get goose bumps.

‘Morgenrot’ offers a bit more rhythm again and invites to clapping before it gets calm and melancholic with ‘Winter’ which does without any rhythm, only to be carried by wonderful strings, piano and vocals. Not less melancholic, but underlined with subtle percussions and drums is ‘Silber im Stein’ and is rewarded with a loud applause and deservedly so. It makes way for the next to gems ‘Komm nie zurück’ and a song that begins like this “I believe I’ve been here in Dresden before, somewhere here I was born; and there I died” and the loud clapping of the audience almost drowns out the rhythm; a good example of how the band involves the people. One of the super hits of LETZTE INSTANS is ‘Wir sind allein’ and you can hardly explain the feelings when you see every single person standing up and singing that song. Guess they stood up in Dresden as well. That was already the last song of the main set, yet there’s a tiny encore with two rather “trivial” songs ‘Das Stimmlein’ and the furious finale ‘Rapunzel’.

Yes, it was a special kind of concert tour and everyone who attended one of the concerts will agree with me. If you haven’t had the chance, then I recommend ‘Weiße Reise’ it captures many of the atmosphere of these concerts and it’s great to hear well-known songs in a more classic costume. The only thing that’s better is to witness it live.
