Album Review

The listener of the recent MECHANICAL MOTH album `Rebirth´ will definitely experience a fusion of the unusual kind, as the Darmstadt-based formation got the Soul-influenced singer Ivy on board who added extraordinary highlights to the Industrial / Electro sound. Now, you may ask yourself whether this connection works: Is it allowed to mix up Soul and Gospel-like vocals with Industrial rhythms? Indeed, it sounds like a combination you need to get used to. Due to this possibly jarring change in style, some fans of electronic music may be horrified whereas it will make other buyers listening attentively.

I would like to anticipate that Ivy has got an amazing voice and that she is able to use it in an emotive way. Actually, her vocals are the best feature on the album. My personal highlight (that has already entered my playlist) is the second track ´Cathedral´. Introduced by a pounding beat, the mid-tempo piece emerges to a danceable and impellent anthem that is supposed to be a dark club hit featuring Ivy’s breathtaking and at this point adjuratory vocals sounding like the ones of an archpriestess.

All in all, danceable up-tempo songs dominate the long-player’s atmosphere. However, I quickly felt sated with them, as the pieces are pretty similar to each other according their structure, sound effects and male vocal lines. For example, `Zealot´ appears like a logical sequel of the previous catchy `Black Queen Style´. Contrary to that, the almost classical ballad `Feenzauber´ radiates a melancholic and at the same time romantic feeling caused by Ivy’s expressive Gospel vocals and a fairytale-like soundscape.

By the way, the album version you will get in stores is a limited edition containing a lot of multimedia stuff besides the 13 tracks. As the promo version didn’t include the bonus, I just focused on rating music and sound. Overall, I’m not sure concerning the final rating. On the one hand, I was very impressed by songs such as `Cathedral´, `Feenzauber´ and `Fiend´; on the other hand, I had the feeling that I had heard that all before. Nevertheless, Ivy’s vocals are a big plus enhancing the entire recording.
