Album Review

This is an interesting band. Filling the gap somewhere between modern Darkwave and old-time Shoegaze they feel like when indie was on the verge of Manchester in the late 80’s. The band’s self-titled debut album was released last summer and this new supporting digital EP features one song off the album and three remixes. Personally I like to see a little more variation in what’s included in EPs. No matter how different the remixes are four, five, six tracks of the same song can get a bit repetitive.

Luckily LIYL have roped in some pretty talented artists to give their tracks three new leases of life. The original track is a nice blend of melancholic and introspective new wave - nice guitar work over some strained sounding vocals. The first remixer ‘Nikko’ Ahlstrom gives the song a nice trip-hop feel with some PORTISHEAD style embellishments. (((S))) get their hands on the song next and give it a rather bland-but-heavy-on-the-reverb finish that is way below their level of talent. Gustav UddGard’s interpretation is a more upbeat and dance floor friendly re-style that is the first major departure from the sound on the original.

While there has been some effort that has gone into this release it does feel rather empty. The first two remixes on it aren’t a million miles away from the original which itself is good, but not great. A new song or a cover would have made things a bit more interesting.
