Album Review

I think that STEINKIND have their own way when it comes to songs. With their third album, ‘Etappe 011’, they’ve decided to surprise us and the first song sets the feeling throughout the CD. From the ‘Antipop (press next to skip intro)’ you know that they want not just to fuse different aspects of Punk, Pop, House, Electro to name just a few among many but to mock Pop and at the end of the album you get the feeling that they have decided to mock the audience. It is not that they completely abandoned their harder style but they have ruined it for most of the songs. They have subjected it to some form of formalism. ‘GB Rita’ serves here as a fine example. The song starts with sounds of the sea, continues with some ridiculous German then some rockabilly enters in and under various mood swings pretty much one minute passes (which in terms of 4 min songs is a century) before they accelerate a bit, then slow down as if the song bites and only then step the pedal to the metal. And to set things straight; when they actually do that, and I mean the hard and fast tempos, the results are magnificent.

One should hear ‘Belehr Mich’, which though it is not that fast, it will nevertheless bring to your mind great moments of the band’s past. Yet, as I said they decided to mock Pop. That is many of the aspects of popular culture. What they’ve managed is to confirm the power of Pop, especially when it comes down to the aspect of the easy listening. Paradoxically one of the best songs of the album is ‘Weil Nur Hier Oben’ which will send you straight back to the Synth of the 80’s. I feel that STEINKIND is specifically aiming at this decade after all. The whole album will leave you with mixed feelings, which under different circumstances would be a great and very interesting thing. If you have something aggressive in your mind like let’s say ‘Warum’ and ‘Disco-Anarchie’ (from the album ‘Galle Gift Und Grössenwahn’) or even the ‘Deutchland Brennt’ just forget it. The band declares that doesn’t want to have anything to do with all that and that ‘Etappe 011’ is a new chapter for them. STEINKIND was running alone and managed to finish second. Bravissimo!
