Album Review

German electro project CALVA Y NADA has gone silent years ago. Still, the echoes of its work are ringing in the heads of those who are actually old enough to remember it. The remaining pressings of their releases being sold at mad prices. Those not inclined to spend half of their salary for an old record, should have a look at the re-mastered version of the classic 'Diaz Felizes'. Even though the recording was sonically cleared from dust it is still audibly from the past. That's actually what's giving it a lot of its charm. This is the sound of electro as it was practised in the early 90s by many bands. Only little of them gained a reputation as long-lasting and solid as that of CALVA Y NADA.

The sound of Diaz Felizes' bounces from the archaic industrial-influenced pulses of tracks like 'Die Reise' or 'Rascheln', still a regular in DJs playlists, to cinematic soundtrack-like pieces as 'Sturz' invoking moments of ambient immersion or 'Yak', incorporating elements giving it a touch of world music. The closest reference I could come up with at the moment are YELWORC whereas their sound never left any space for light. The closing title 'Dralles Weib' combines all the aforementioned elements in one track. The clanging of metallic drums mixes with sinister textures of melody. So if you're an aficionado of the classic electro sound be quick to get hold of a copy of this, before those are sharing the fate of the original pressings.
