Album Review

Even before the release of ‘Malignant Shields’ late 2006 saw the release of ‘XFrames’ which is not a regular album, but a collection of previously unreleased songs, mostly originating from the time of their first album ‘Moonflower’ plus some remixes.

The first piece ‘From Hell’ comes as a writhing creature, crawling up from the deepest abysms of hell. It’s more of a sound collage, wrapped inside dark textures and revolved by subtle industrial beats. Instead of vocals, the song tells the story through movie speech samples. Other than the following ‘Blind’ that builds up more pressure through a constant beat, it becomes even darker with ghostly choirs, penetrating through the layers. The vocals are like a floating stream of evil, infiltrating into the ideal world. ‘Sacred Truth’ is honoured three times on this release by different remixers, sadly the original version is not included, would have been nice to see the differences. I was impressed by GAPING GHASM’s version, having soundtrack like qualities. It’s working with speech samples, complemented by large ambient layers and in the second half, noisy beat patterns, while FLINT GLASS’ rework fully trusts in what he does best, rhythmic complexity, this time enriched by bit-crushing effects. You wouldn’t believe which power is resting in ‘Vibrations’, starting as a small, calm piece o f music, filled with the elegance of melodic keys and quite reluctant beats, a little foretaste of what’s to come after about 1:30 Min, when the song turns into a raging beast of rhythmic harshness, just to return to its former self in the end.

‘Masonic’ turns out to be a menacing monstrosity of multifarious colliding rhythms, mixed with the convex darkness of strings. The next two songs ‘Personal Prison’ and the Remix of ‘Brain’ already bear the clear hallmarks of the style, the guys will celebrate on upcoming releases. Classically arranged melodies, spreading into eternity, impaired with skilfully crafted beats, showing a broad richness of detail, though the constructions on ‘XFrames’ are of a much colder nature and heavily influenced by early industrial. The experimental Version of ‘Yourself’ deserves the attribute longest track on the album and is one of those that firstly build up slowly to subsequently surprise you with its beauty. The concluding ‘Arris’ then is a instrumental again accompanied by kind of a wiping synth sequence , while drops of massive beats fall down to earth, especially interesting is this violin sample, perfectly fitting into the sonic world of the song.

With ‘XFrames’ you gonna take a look into the past of this project. The sound was much darker and harder as it is now, but it’s already recognizable in which direction the sound will develop in the future…
