Introduction

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from the Dutch project DARK TERRITORY. Well, for one both we’re insanely working on getting the follow-up to ‘Libera me’ entitled ‘Dichotomy’ done, but serious health issues put the entire release process on hiatus, but luckily things are getting better slowly, so it was decided to release the ‘Schmerztanz EP’ as strictly limited edition as an appetizer of what’s to come

Track Review

1. Schmerztanz - 4:02
We start right away with ‘Schmerztanz’ turning out to be one of Dark Territory’s more danceable tunes., starting with just a repetitive synth riff,  a powerful beat soon kicks in and makes the legs want to move. With the incorporation of spectral female choir the track cultivates an incredible atmosphere, densifying with the addition of violin, but  ‘Schmerztanz’ really gains momentum when the rhythmic percussions come in, closely followed by John’s vocals, building up an intense hypnotic undertow with the improvised vocal line escalating to ecstasy.

2. Tora Firome (Ankara Edit by Sensory Gate) - 4:09
The solemn ‘Tora Firome’ was one of my highlights on the debut ‘Libera Me’ and usually I’m not the one to say, I’d absolutely need a remix, but you can make an exception once in a while, because the ‘mostly’ Italy based band SENSORY GATE pulled of the feat to obtain the initial melancholic atmosphere of the song, even intensifying it, especially in the main part of the improvised lyrics with the subtly background synth layers and soft acoustic guitar. The rhythmic section is brand new and reveals percussions as well as eclectic electronic elements which male it comparatively more danceable than the original.

3. Die Geschichte einer Blume (feat. Sara Noxx) - 1:48
The text to the flower’s tale was already imprinted in the booklet to ‘Libera me’ and now is brought to life by the seductive voice of SARA NOXX underlined with spherical hovering sound collages. There’s also a video to this song which can be seen on the band’s website.

4. Vrijdag (Frigga Mix by Tonikom) - 4:08
Another remix, this time of the very percussion driven ‘Frijdag’ also from ‘Libera Me’, but there’s no sign of these elements anymore; instead the track received a completely electronic rework with partly very disturbing distorted effects, atmospheric drops and rather straight electronic beat work. Alone john’s penetrating vocals still tell you that it’s the same song after all.

Conclusion

After this appetizer it’s hard to wait until the full album comes out next year, but health always comes first. Both the regular tracks and the remixes are quality work and there’s something for both the dreamers ‘Tora Firome’ and for the dance maniacs ‘Schmerztanz’. If you want to get a physical copy hurry up as it’s only limited amount available, otherwise the EP is also available via ITunes.
