Album Review

BELLA LUNE came to life in 2005, after Fuchsia’s former band ANNADYNE had broke up and she met Kal3id in October of the same year. Kal3id provided additional arrangement and instrumentation for the first album, and helped Fuchsia to mix, produce, and master the songs. The debut ‘Abstract Visions’ was released as digital download on 31st October 2007 and regularly on CD on 31st March 2008. A second album is planned for 2009.

‘Out of Control’ invites us into the world of ‘Abstracted Visions’ and it sounds like minimalist 80s wave when the drum computers take on their duty, but also the other sounds like the soft sequences and melody layers seem to be made to take you back in time sound-wise, while Fuchsia’s very child-like appear entirely weightless in there. ‘Neverwhere’ is a mystical place, another dimension; in this song a place that’s so much better than the stark and cold reality “Where everything’s pretty again.” And you’re feeling safe; sadly it’s just a dream. The tracks is again marked by minimalist rhythms, however the melodies emerging slowly are great and create an incredibly dense ambience that is drenched with pure melancholy. The murmuring of the waves is taking us to the shores of ‘Underwater’ and this time it’s another kind of atmosphere that’s surrounding us. BELLA LUNE injects organic sound-scapes into the track. Carefully played drums, mournful violins and acoustic guitars as well imbue these shores. Do they come from a place somewhere beneath the waves?

Did you ever take a deep look into the skies on a relatively clear night? How those clouds can take on various shapes and the starlight is able to take your spirit away into eternity for a while? That’s an image, conjured by ‘Full Moon on a Half Night’ where a mystical mood is given birth blended with piano, solemn drumming and at times rousing orchestral elements. By the way, some of the guitar or bass chords strongly remind me of THE CURE. In ‘Silent and Still’ they remind us how fleeting life is “Your face is like solid stone. So perfectly painted and pale….Reminds me that this fragile life, is merely a loan to us. Until we too fall silent and still. And vanish into the blowing dust.” The lyrics are like describing a recently deceased loved person. The chords on this solemn song carry grief; both electronic and organic in various stages which makes it quite an oppressive tune. Like ‘Full Moon…’ from before ‘Coil’ is started by a piano solo which soon are getting lost in wide atmospherics and a comparatively frantic electronic rhythm. Sometimes sounds like a lighter variation of Drum’n’Bass.

‘Abstracted Visions’ is an album with atmospherically dense compositions sure to please the ears of fans from THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE and their likes, but also people who like minimalist Cold Wave arrangements with a good pinch of ambience and want to drift into the pats for a while might want to risk an ear on this well crafted debut.
