Album Review

HEADSPACE is a band from Britain and was formed in 2006 by Adam Wakeman, who is also in OZZY OSBOURNE’s band, and to throw another fact in: he is son of YES keyboardist Rick Wakeman, Taking inspiration from bands such as RUSH, (maybe a tad predictably) YES, GENESIS but also DREAM THEATER, they’ve turned out a single and in May this year there was their debut album ‘I Am Anonymous’, which is what we’re going to concern ourselves with here in this review. Conceived as a concept album where the listener is pointed at and nudged to examine his/hers “relationship with humanity, ultimately the battles fought within the mind from child to man.“

There is obvious honed and polished musical skill clearly heard throughout the album and of course the homage to the past greats fell into the overall sound of the band, but there is also a great sensitivity at play here that is probably what stands out most within the beautiful compositions, which can also be called pristine even though they deal with the harsher truths and at times have an understated intensity in intent and emotion. The lyrics indeed engage the listener to think or at least to enjoy their contents and for this I especially recommend listening to ‘Soldier’. It is followed by harder ‘Die With A Bullet’ which pays more nod to modern trends of metal, with the jarring sound of riffs and darker tones I would connect its dots (loosely) to Math Metal, though contrasted within the piece with the lighter and crystal-like keyboards. ‘Hell’s Name’ is quite an epic number, including organ, choir and funereal atmosphere; the vocals are really outstanding here. The atmospheres are build with a great amount of acumen.

HEADSPACE’s debut is engaging, of truly good quality regarding skills and song-writing, which don’t come out as sterile at all, and has many interesting facets, both sound-wise and lyrically and as such heartily recommended to at least give it a listen, I was pleasantly surprised by it.
