Album Review

In their home country it is a little sensation that an English singing French band from Paris is slowly gaining more and more success despite a quote that’s protecting the French-tongued songs on the radio. With ‘Moderne Incidental’ the Frenchmen are going to release their already second album.

The first song ‘Can you Call Me’ goes straight from zero to hero, starting with driving riffs and a few electronics while the racing drums come in a few seconds later and Bruno adds kind of a sexually-charged mood to the song. ‘Johnny Five’ (a hint on the Short Circuit series centering around the robotic star?) also has a fair groove pumping through its veins, a couple of rhythmic shifts and a doze of light-footed 80s key gadgets seemingly dancing on the rhythms. ‘Peter & The Wolves’ is the acoustic version of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. First everything’s calm and cosy with a tambourine, some soft, melodic guitars and vocals and did I mention the drums? Anyway, the wolf slowly peels off the sheep’s closing to show his real face in the latter really rocking third of the track. A real cool suspense! Is it just me or is a small glimpse of THE SMITHS shining through now and then on ‘Lines’, especially the second part of the chorus  which totally sounds like MORRISSESY if you ask me. Listen for yourself and tell mi if I’m totally nuts already or not.

‘Diamond Lane’ is a little like ‘Peter & The Wolves’ but it keeps the calm mood most of the time and Bruno gives spoken-word performance rather than singing the lines. The point where the small wolf similarity comes in is the last minute as the song becomes extremely powerful and we get to hear an amazing guitar solo with an overly dynamic drum part. The album ends just as it has begun with an upfront, dirty Indie rock tune called ‘Carsick’.

‘Moderne Incidental’ covers all facets of the Indie Rock genre and adds a few own touches as well. Not necessarily extraordinary in parts but as a whole it’s still an Indie Rock records on a high level.
