Album Review

The sophomore self-titled album of Danish singer OH LAND seems to be quite promising even with the first sounds of the opening piece, entitled ‘Perfection’. The composition, that could be really called perfect, makes a balance between delicate tranquil sounds and strong, regular rhythm repeating the one from ‘We Will Rock You’. The whole combination is supplemented with the beautiful vocals and actually should produce a soporific effect however it doesn’t happen thanks to the rhythm and the energetic parts into which the main melody sometimes develops. ‘Break the Chain’ is a bit more expressive, bright and interesting yet still has almost the same structure as its predecessor. Probably, the vitality and power of the songs progress from one track to another and ‘Sun of a Gun’ with its pulsating rhythm may definitely become a hit and dance floor filler. The album itself is full of such potential hits and a listener can choose any of them depending on his or her taste. Moreover the compositions are meant not just for dance floors but could suit for background music quite well charging one with positive energy.

Of course ‘Oh Land’ contains calmer tracks with a tiny shade of melancholy like ‘Lean’ which creates an imponderable atmosphere of expectation that finally leads to nothing despite the smooth ending and the song seems to be unfinished. ‘Wolf & I’ also carries some notes of sadness but the composition is firmer in general while ‘Human’ with its peaceful melodic beginning gradually gains strength and completes the most lyrical part of the album, changing into stirring ‘White Nights’ and ‘We Turn It Up’. The final track ‘Rainbow’ stands out thanks to the interesting arrangement and indeed you imagine a rainbow in the sky hearing the weakening sounds of rain and muffed peals of thunder. All in all the album is simply great when there’s nothing to add or to remove and may attract almost absolutely different kinds of listeners.
