Album Review

Initially intended to be just a birthday gift, the music on the first EP led to such reactions that PASSION PIT became a fully-fledged band, playing for groups such as DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. 'Gossamer' is the follow-up to 'Manners' which hit in 2009 already. Pigeon-holing their style into the electro pop drawer would be an understatement. The first song on the album 'Take A Walk' indeed has the ingredients of classic electro or synth pop, respectively while incorporating the hand-made sounds of a real band, so the term electro pop doesn't suit it quite right.'I'll Be Alright' comes up with one or the other surprise presenting to the unprepared listener a twisted structure of seemingly random patterns to culminate in a cohesive straight track.

Actually, 'Constant Conversations' seems more like your average R'n'B song if it wasn't fro that certain kind of atmosphere that sets it apart at least at little. 'Mirrored Sea' is the closest thing to a rock song on the album and regardless of its airy electronic comes across like a gritty piece of handmade music. 'Hideaway' opens with a sonic experiment based on atmospheric distortion, which is giving it kind of a disjointed feel at first, however in the later course it's evolving to a lovely and bright pop song. 'Two Veils To Hide My Face' simply is a polyphonic chant that would fit an answering machine and cater for at least interested listeners. The closing track 'Where We Belong' invokes all the trademarks you have come to witness on this album, weirdo synth arpeegios, minimal beats, heart rending melodies and an outshining vocal performance.

So it has gotten clear that 'Gossamer' is not your ordinary synth po, it is rather a sophisticated melange of many styles including the intention to irritate listeners with unusual sections and sounds. Thus, a recommendation
