Album Review

The balladry ‘This is’ introduces us to the trademark sounds of the debut album ‘Home Philosophy’ of Hamburg-based band SUE. Classically-fragile acoustic sounds hook up with the unique high voice of Skip, who spent years as being the screamer of a band, and get enveloped by a refrained electronic rhythm. ‘I woke up’ continues in similar footsteps yet the electronic undercurrent subjacent to the acoustically drenched sky gives off a warmer organic feeling. Even a club hymn like ‘Unsigned Hype’ that is grounding on an insisting beat that’s demanding to shake your tired limbs, seems in its very own way calm and soothing. Maybe this is due to the special vocals combined with the airy 80s influenced synth melodies that are pervading the first minute of the song to retreat into the background to occasionally breakthrough to the front during the song. By the way the guitar melody back at the beginning strongly reminds me of a PHILLIP BOA song I just heard ‘The World has been unfaithful’. If someone knows that song you’ll know what I mean.

‘New York’ falls back into slow regions. Other than its album peers it’s getting along completely without any additional rhythmic accents. So the vocals and the instruments can spread across the whole width of your audible spectrum making you get lost in its sonic worlds until it fades. ’Get back on a Chain’ is again a more danceable track whereas one’s temped to forget dancing entirely in the face if such beautiful and dreamy atmospheres as getting presented on this track the whole time through. As placidly as the album has started it ends with ‘Freak’ during the course of which Skip’s voice is also presented with a robotic effect applied on it which I find in this context more disturbing than appealing what doesn’t hurt in any way the positive impression this song leaves and also the complete album leaves an overly positive impression with songs coming from the heart full of strong musicianship and melancholy. A debut worth listening!
