Album Review

VOICES OF DESTINY formed in 2004, they are German band fronted by a female singer. Poised between Epic and Gothic Metal they have released a debut LP ‘From The Ashes’ which met with great enthusiasm on the scene. Buoyed by this success they entered the studio the very same year (to be exact it was only last year’s summer) to work on their second album ‘Power Dive’ which came out on 27th January this year.

As their main characteristic they list the juxtaposition of the female vocal with the growls of the male, even this is appearing/is not unusual within the trend, but here it works out truly well and stands them in a good stead. At times you will be treated to what has now became quite a cliché within the Goth Metal genre, however, when there is their own unique brand stamped on, it’s much welcome and one can only wish that they would not rush into recording next time and tightened their style to the side which shows their own mark more. It must be said it’s when the Gothic interlays with the Epic/Power side of Metal (of course the growls are more associated with Extreme Metal, but they’re nothing new in the Power Metal either).

You might especially enjoy the chorus line in ‘Kami’ and the growled part is great there. This song leans more on the Power Metal part and illustrates the above point well enough. Although the song manages to stay dramatic, that is to say epic, some of the female vocal should have been reigned in not to get into melodramatic cringe-earning moments. That is if dramatic is good and melodramatic bad in your books, if not, it’s something to disregard indeed and even enjoy - after all, one person’s point of criticism is another one’s praise. ‘Being Worth’ has some good moments musically where it concerns the instrumental parts, but as a whole comes out as far too cheesy and should have been left behind with the good parts left on a sheet for later.

To sum up, I think they should not have rushed this album, it’d have benefited from more time, more attention and more thought going into it. However, there is a lot of promise in this band and I judged their effort against it and can only wish that in future they will fulfil their potential more fully. Having said all that, it’s still a good album to give it a listen.
