Album Review

UNEASE is musical duo hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, consisting of Tommy Falk & Patrik Lark, and their self-released EP ‘Mind The Gloom’ should be their debut effort. Although their influences vary from NIRVANA and DEPECHE MODE to NINE INCH NAILS and PORTISHEAD, they seem to get stuck to repetitive mid-tempo song structures, filled with melancholy, that seldom lead to a catchy pop refrain. “What’s the problem?” somebody might wonder, then. The basic drawback is that the undeniable talent of UNEASE gets buried under the extensive use of electronics along with a heavy-like production, that lack originality or even worse never lead to melodic outbursts.

Take for instance the STABBING WESTWARD-like ‘Absinthe’: Setting off promisingly, with a perfect, moody introductory part, in the musical legacy of the unforgettable SW, in big disappointment fails to fulfil our hope for a great single, due to the lack of good poppy refrain. Surely, this one is a dignified effort, that has its moments, and also, above all, remains promising for the band. If only, they reconsider their song structure, and approach pop culture like their musical icons.
