The beginnings of Norwegian VULTURE INDUSTRIES date back to 1998, when they were active as Dead Rose Garden. In 2003, they renamed and have so far released three full length records, such as ‘The Dystopia Journal’ (2007), ‘The Malefactor’s Bloody Register’ (2010) and the most recent ‘The Tower’ (2013). On ‘The Tower’, VULTURE INDUSTRIES present their unusual combination of Black Metal with progressive elements and avant-garde arrangements. To say the least, this is definitely not an easy-listening album – on the contrary, the first listening may tend to leave the listener baffled, especially when not familiar with the former work of the band. Yet, this sort of music needs some time to grow, be understood and then fully indulged.
VULTURE INDUSTRIES make frequent use of experimental song structures and unusual instrumentations - in form of saxophone or keyboard for instance. In general, the arrangements appear demanding and technically skilled – on top, singer Bjørnar E. Nilsen shows a wide range of vocals, varying from whispered to very powerful and clean sung. No song on ‘The Tower’ is like another, since the song constructions are very manifold and complex. Therefore, it is also hard to pinpoint any outstanding title - there are definitely no lowlights on ‘The Tower’ and its best to enjoy the album as a whole. The atmosphere ranges from weird, chaotic to compelling, vigorous and pensive. To conclude, ‘The Tower’ is highly recommended for any open-minded and experiment-loving fan of extreme music.
