The idea for this project already came up in 1995, but due to several circumstances it took until 2009 before an album finally sees the light of day and it’s called ‘Atmosphere around us’. With the first darkly shimmering notes of the opening track ‘Cinema of Soul’ it becomes apparent the music of WINTRY reflects the title in a perfect way. Eerie symphonic arrangements encompass a down tempo rhythm while singer Anne performs the lyrics by turns in English and German and takes away into a different world. Also the second track off the album ‘Voices’ comes with orchestral bonds; in fact they’re setting off the track until a more driving beat phases in under them and will command many people to the dance floors if used in a club setting. ‘True Lies’ opens up with slow percussion to be complemented within the next the next seconds by an industrialized rhythmic make up that surely is rooted deep in the 80s. ‘Unreale Welt’ is one of two tracks exclusively sung in German with Anne’s voice placed amidst a compound of low-key oppressing ambiance catering for a languorous shower of goose bumps and another 80s influenced drum offering.
The title track is an instrumental interlude full of synthetically evoked moods that keeps lingering on in your head long after it has actually ended. A more danceable structure underscores the concluding scene ‘Words’ as well adding to it the trademark symphonic and lots of 80s flavour. As dark and otherworldly as the music appears also does the artwork kept in muted and dark colours so both fit together well and that’s not always the case. A world of gloomy beauty awaits the ones that are poised to enter the world of ‘Atmosphere around us’ so if you’re one of those individuals - being a fan of 80s Gothic and Electro would be ok too - then you shouldn’t miss out on the album.
