Album Review

Cineastes should know the person this compilation is dedicated to: Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922 - 1975) was an Italian director, screen writer, essayist, poet, critic and novelist who was responsible for movies such as “The Decameron”, “The Canterbury Tales” or “The 120 Days of Sodom”. Being a creative and intelligent eccentric, the homosexual Pasolini caused some scandals due to his obscene imagery he had used in his movies. In November 1975, he was found dead in Ostia after he had been intentionally run down by a car. Though the hustler Pino Pelosi confessed the murder, that criminal case hasn’t been completely solved up to now.

By releasing this compilation, a respectable line-up of alternative artists such as BAHNTIER, THE FROZEN AUTUMN and COIL reminds of Pasolini´s work and shows respect to his outstanding merits in the world-wide cultural scene by contributing partly rare or previously unreleased songs that are everything but mainstream and therefore well-suited for being a musical tribute to a colourful and brilliant character. `Songs for a Child: A Tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini´ is also available as a limited numbered box edition including a postcard, a book and an exclusive magic amulet. Starting with chirping of crickets, COIL´s acoustic and pretty classical piece `Ostia (The Death of Pasolini) opens up the musical commemoration followed up by BAHNTIER´s electronic contribution entitled with `Childawn´ that features some dark and portentous speech samples.

Compared to the previous tracks, `My Erotic Sacrifice´ by SPIRITUAL FRONT appears very melodic, catchy and with a lot of Pop-appeal. Referring to the murdered director’s origin, some Italian language representatives shouldn’t be missing: TEATRO SATANICO delivered very experimental electronic stuff while CONDANNA´s `Sotto un cielo di fango e sangue´ features dark ambient sounds. All in all, the extraordinary compilation is a sophisticated collection of gloomy pieces which are difficult to access with regard to listeners who usually prefer rather melodic and danceable material.
