Popmeisterschaft 2009: Klee, Radiopilot, Paula, Nachlader

This rainy evening in May was all under the sign of pop music when four different bands out of that genre turned up at Kulturfabrik in Krefeld to cater for a funny, musical evening at the not so crowded venue.

Nachlader

NACHLADER was already active in times when MTV actually still played music videos with singles such as the single ‘Arbeitsgeld’ (2004) or the ‘An die Wand’ EP from 2005. The debut album ‘Bock auf Aphorismen’ then followed in March 2005 just as the accompanying single ‘Fett’. In the meantime since their last release NACHLADER has done lots of club gigs and DJing with his friend Shokkaboy. Last info is that the band works on a new album are in full swing right now. http://www.nachlader.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/nachlader

Music & Performance
So this was the first band on the billing in the fight for the pop throne. A band I personally couldn’t connect anything with so far but it turned out they’re a real pleasure to watch. ‘Nach Hause’ was the first song they’ve played and while the little band rocked a little behind their instruments the audience kept a lot of distance to the stage and preferred mere watching. With the next song ‘An die Wand’, Mr. NACHLADER Daniel Baumann took off the guitar and started wandering up and down the stage while performing the song which had quite some bits of the melody of TRIO’s greatest hit ‘Da Da Da’ in it and after a song about a drug Daniel wants to renounce, follows the discovery that life isn’t always a walk in the park and only consists of fun with ‘Das Leben ist nicht immer Pommes und Disco’ with a propelling mixture of charismatic rhythm accents and guitar.

The proof how poor musicians actually are followed after the song ‘Arbeitsgeld’ preferably cashing in money for doing nothing when he asked for some EUR and as the audience was so generous they actually threw a coin or two on the stage. A special treat was still to come with the first single of drummer Marco Barotti’s solo album ‘Brauche’, a crude mixture of Italo pop with German lyrics, but cool. With ‘Gitarre’ we’ve already reached the last song but afterwards we were promised to see some of the guys again soon.

Paula

PAULA was born at a chance meeting of Elke Brauweiler and Berend Intelmann at a concert. Subsequently both musicians moved together and decided to henceforth make music together and in 2000 released the first PAULA album ‘Himmelfahrt’. After the third album ‘Ruhig Blut’ released in 2005, Berend Intelmann left the line-up so that Elke is the only remaining original member. The most recent album with the title ‘So wie jetzt’ saw its release in May 2008. http://www.paula-musik.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/paulaswelt

PAULA, actually Elke was next on the bill and as already promised we could celebrate a reunion with some old acquaintances from before, namely Daniel Baumann and Marco Barotti who are also live members of PAULA. After the lady had entered the stage the show started right away with ‘Zurück an den Anfang’. It was accentuated by gentle sounds from the background and again rhythmic accents by Marco Barotti who, and that’s what I recognized just now, displayed various mimics that always caused a big grin on my face. In-between the songs the band and especially Elke were never tired to do some jokes and tell some anecdotes about Peter Maffay and stuff and an easy atmosphere was generated making it less a concert than a little party of some friends with a lot of music we now want to get back to and that lave due to the mostly natural instrumentation gets lots of drive. Through the pithy but agreeable voice of Elke a unique trademark delivering lyrics that are partly not easy accessible. But I like challenges and in times of shallow words packed in music that instantly gets to the top of charts a welcome diversion.

As I said before the mood was very laid-back and the people in a much better mood to dance and enjoy themselves than before! But besides songs that invited to dance which were definitely were in superior number (of course) such as ‘Lass es Raus’, ‘Tadellos’ or ‘Als es passierte’ there were also calmer moments here and there with one special moment being an acoustically performed song called ‘Seemann’. After the final presentation of ‘Jimmy’ (constantly demanded throughout the show) after the band had been demanded back for a little encore and a cover of the PLASTIC BERTRAND hit ‘Ca Plane Pour Moi’ culminating the set with a big celebration the audience bid the troop loudly farewell and waiting for the next act began.

Radiopilot

The band was formed under the name KIMONO in 2005 and successfully took part in the Emergenza contest and made the finals of the contest. In spring 2006, they changed its name to RADIOPILOT and participated in the John Lennon Talent Award contest and won. In 2007, the band signed a label deal with Sony/BMG Columbia in Germany. After production of the debut album had been finished in November 2007, the band started touring quite a lot with bands of the likes of JULI, MONEYBROTHER and as support of ICH+ICH. Following the download single ‘Fahrrad’ in spring 2008 and the first physical single ‘Monster’ on 1st August was eventually the debut album ‘Leben passiert’ in late August 2008. RADIOPILOT is Lukas Pizon (vocals, guitar), Rafael Triebel (guitar), Benjamin Steinke (bass), Florian Büttner (keys), and Christoph Hengelhaupt (drums). http://www.radiopilot.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/radiopilot

While the changeover for RADIOPILOT took place we’re already noticing several tube-TVs built up on various points of the stage and started wondering what this is about. We would learn soon enough when the first song ‘Fahrrad’ would start and several scenes with Lego figures appeared on them. Scenes of the self-made alternate video the band did for the track ‘Monster’. It had the character of a video installation as the video scenes shown varied from song to song over the course of this show. But the performance had one technical drawback for singer Lukas Pizon’s voice hardly understandable and we would encounter that problem several times in the course of the show. But that’s actually the only real complain one can have about the performance as a whole.

The set went on with ‘Du+Ich’ and ‘Tokyo:Berlin’, here called Tokyo:Krefeld, all combining nicely the elements of pop, elements of electronic and rock music. With the smooth vocals of Lukas who - fitting to the respective song - rocked with his band colleagues or stood at the microphone and was underscoring the lyrics with gestures and mimics. Another detail of the show we noticed a few songs into the set was the cameras mounted for instance on the microphone stand or guitar neck and the videos were shown on the TV’s offering some interesting visual perspectives. Most of the songs played originated from the first album ‘Leben passiert’ like the melancholic ‘Immer wenn wir träumen’, ‘Zoogedanken’ or the single ‘Monster’ which was the last song of the set. Time flew and it was like 10 minutes ago that they had started to play. Anyway, I enjoyed that little performance and I’d like to see them again with the vocal sound problem fixed.

Klee

In the 1990s, Tom Deininger, Sten Servaes and Suzie Kerstgens formed RALLEY, but an accident in 2002 forced them to take a break and reformed as KLEE. 2002 was also the year which saw the first album after the re-birth with the name ‘Unverwundbar’ (Invulnerable). The single ‘Erinner dich’ from the album peaked in the charts at #94. The first single off the second album ‘Jelängerjelieber’ released in October 2004, entitled ‘2 Fragen’ made it into TV and radio rotation. The album also included the biggest hit of the band to this date ‘Gold’. The newest and fourth opus of the band carries the title ‘Berge versetzen’ and was released not so long ago in October 2008. KLEE is Suzie Kerstgens (vocals), Tom Deininger (guitar, vocals), Sten Servaes (piano, keys, vocals), Stefan Götzer (bass) and Daniel Klingen (drums) http://www.kleemusik.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/kleeband

Music & Performance
And now it was finally time for the main act and many people seem to have just come for this band as the audience had grown considerably at the time the band started off with their set. Till not as packed as it could be but definitely the largest amount of people this evening. One after one the band members appeared and took on their places and as the first song ‘Unverwundbar’ sounded, singer Suzie Kerstgens all dressed in black showed up and met a frenetically cheering audience. The song was a quite clam start of the set with gentle guitars, piano and floating layers getting you into a dreamy mood right away strengthened by the blue light the stage was illuminated with. But with the next song ‘2 Fragen’ the guitars had a more prominent standing and promptly the crowd got into wilder motions and speaking of movements Suzie had them down pat as well but in a more eccentric manner like on ‘Tausendfach’ which was a real crowd pleaser, actually; and she proved to be very double-jointed on several occasions too.

Or she would sink fully into the sounds of songs like ‘2 Herzen’ for instance. But as you can’t just play down your set of songs just like that there was a lot of interaction between the band, Suzie for that matter, and the audience - a little chitchat and joking now and then made the atmosphere a lot more familiar for everyone. Of course they played, besides a colourful cross-section through different albums with the grave ‘So lang du lebst’, Lichtstrahl’ or ‘Die Königin’ where Suzie did jump around happily like a little girl, one of their greatest hits ‘Gold’ and what could be a better fit to this song than to let rain down golden foil on the audience which had huge fun dancing around (I did mention that already did I?) After that the band bid farewell to everyone and left but not so fast! That couldn’t be all and so thunderous clapping and shouting brought then back one more time for ‘Für alle, die’.

But after that the show was ultimately over and the happy masses all headed towards the exit or the merch booth to buy one or the other thing and other people’s way just let them straight to the bar and the dance floors to party on until dawn. But our way led us home where our beds waited for us for we were pretty tired but satisfied by what we’ve just seen. It was just a pity that not more people turned up. Maybe next time.
