With their trilogy, NORTHERN LITE created a counter draft to the usual procedure to fuse music and motion pictures. In this - in the history of music videos effectively unique endeavour - the (almost) exact same One Shot Video was shot for three different tracks from the new album ‘Super Black’. In the result, the spectator sees the same plot three times. But the timing was adapted to the various playing time of the songs and the acting persons are getting more and more.

The idea was realised with low-tech means only. Recorded with the video function of a cheap digital camera from a self-made steady-cam, consisting of a broomstick, a filled water bottle and gaffa band. Also consequently cut and processed with the hobby cutting program “IMovie”. With their video trilogy NORTHERN LITE make a contribution to the current pop discourse, to questions of uniqueness and deceleration as well as the hunger for new things.

One Shot Trilogy
If one throws the post-modern love for the repetition as a deed of difference - as positive possibility of the storyline – into the room and hot-wires it with the neo-formalistic construct of the de-automatization of perception, then you’ll maybe find it not that strange anymore, why someone should mount an old digital camera onto a broomstick and change the same construction with the video function of that cheap bought device into a home-grown steady-cam, with which not three videos were shot in one take, but one video for three songs, which only then creates the difference in the repetition.

Because the repeating wants an again, but this again never happens at the same time. The time itself sets the difference and the return becomes visualisation, bygone things become absent present. The positioning of the One Shot Trilogy contrary to the usual procedures in contemporary video production should be very clearly.

Because if the aesthetical product is considered as a construct of different artistic procedures, chosen for specific purposes, whether to comply with or in deliberate antithesis to specific contextual and aesthetical conventions, then the efficiency of a single artwork originates from an alienation effect, from a de-automation of perception. The usual, already automated kind of perception is changed to an unusual, not yet automated kind due to the influences of artistic procedures.

But if the continuous use leads to a familiarization, then the use of such procedures unfamiliar to the spectator, or familiar procedures in an unusual context will be necessary in order to accomplish the desired effect. So the effect of artistic procedures is only given in the context of contextual and aesthetical conventions familiar to the spectator, which they correspond or resist to. Or, to put it in a nutshell: New is the new old. But different.
