Album Review

RED LAMB is an American Rock/Metal band, formed in 2010. The band consists of Dan Spitz (former member of Anthrax) and Don Chaffin, who are supported by their self-entitled Brothers in Arms. They are co-produced and supported with regard to their lyrics by Dave Mustaine (Megadeth). Style-wise, they combine elements of Rock, Metal, Thrash and use crossover elements like rap. On ‘Red Lamb’, RED LAMB provide a very modern and crossover mixture of rock, metal and even pop and rap. Their lyrics are very interesting and demanding, for instance ‘Puzzle Box’ deals with autism. Other songs include critical discussions of society and human behaviour. The opener ‘The Cage’ provides a very grooving middle-tempo song with distinct vocals, which vary between clear and harsh. ‘One Shell (in the Chamber)’ continues in that manner and is more driven and dominated by the vocals.

The following ‘Standby Passenger’ makes use of breakdowns and strict changes between fast and slow parts. A tendency to more rap-influenced vocals can already be heard, which is even more prominent in ‘Puzzle Box’. RED LAMB also make use of catchy melodies and include a crossover-approach with influences with many genres, but somehow this all appears to puzzled together. The guitar work is good and varied, but the hip hop influences and rap vocals are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. The lyrics are definitely interesting to look at and it’s worth mentioning that they surely have a story to tell. Yet, the music is very modern and nu-metal like and stands a bit behind the dominant vocals. Furthermore, things appear to be very mixed up and a recurrent theme or style would make listening definitely easier.
