Album Review

Richie Blackmore, best known for his role in DEEP PURPLE but also for his own band RAINBOW, counted together with a rich career as a session musician and involvement with countless other outfits he still has not been happy to settle with that impressive list of activities, but is also involved in a project with his wife (Candice Night) called BLACKMORE’S NIGHT, classed as traditional Folk Rock and the musical couple is well known on the Renaissance fairs and festivals and even castle tours; ‘Dancer And The Moon’ is their ninth studio album. The mixture of folk tradition and rock seems a happy marriage also. It kicks off with a Randy Newman’s ‘I Think It’s Going To Rain Today’ which is a pleasant introduction which shows the aforementioned marriage of styles in a perfect balance of equal and impressive parts.

It’s not the only cover here; URIAH HEEP’s ‘Lady In Black’ is another, and they’ve even reached to RAINBOW’s catalogue and gave a new life to ‘The Temple Of The King’, needless to say they’re tastefully and masterfully done as is to be expected!  The last in the album is a song in tribute to late Jon Lord; it’s not sentimental in any way but moving nevertheless.  And in between these there’s a plenty to love, the album titled song inviting to dance, at once quite a Celtic feel and yet a modern tale, the beautiful and soft ‘The Ashgrove’ where you can be soothed around the edges with its lullaby/ballad feel. The story-telling within the songs is also faultless... which can be one of the ways to describe this album as a whole. The folksy elements are never over the top and the rock never crosses the line to disrespect it but compliments it in wonderful way. More than a soundtrack to dreaming that can cross boundaries of time and traditions across the world; it’s an album that seems a solace, a healing of sorts.
