Album Review

CAT RAPES DOG from Sweden, founded around 1984, and being one of Sweden's earliest exports for the electronic subculture are back with their first album in over 14 years. Entitled 'Live Was Sweet', the album just makes you feel as if those past years of dormancy had never happened. With an energy and attitude those who came after them just lacked many times, they're kicking 'God Hates Christians' right in your face. The following 'Dead Come Back', while being less immediate in its delivery is a spot-on exhibition of a clean indie electronic track thingy with acoustic and electronic drums blending with keys and a memorable bass line. If you were rather looking for a synth pop flavoured example, 'Through A Cross Darkly' is the right cut for you with Annelie going solo on vocals. 'Falling Apart' on the other hand, relocates to uneasy, rather dystopian surroundings, creeps around slowly and viciously on a down tempo beat laced with a rumbling bass line.

'Vote' actually is the only track I can't get myself to like, even though I can't put my finger on what the exact issue is. It's quite the contrary with 'River Of Pain'. That rhythm gets you hooked in an instant and with minimal means creates a dense atmosphere just how I like it until it takes off around the time the chorus starts. 'Crystal Ball' regardless of the clubby beat is turning out quite a serene offering. At times a bit of a post punk influence is shimmering through the cracks. 'Head Around' utilizes a combination of vivid acoustic and electronic drums to get the ball rolling and once it does, it never stops. 'A Thousand Years' is closing up the album with a nice little gem on a taut rhythmic foundation. For those of you who are amongst the 111 people to get a limited edition, the journey continues from here and goes way back to the very beginnings. These are tracks that are available for the first time on a CD and probably never will again.

I'd like to be honest with you, many of these tracks are very much experimental drafts presented on there, giving you an idea of what is eventually to come and an extremely varying recording quality due to the origin of these recordings. I'm not inclined to listen to those on a regular basis, but I understand some of you wanting to get their hands on it just for the sake of completing your collection. I'll stick to the regular album, which I think is quite a comeback after such a long absence.
