Album Review

OK, I admit it. I’ve missed out on the ANKLEBITER debut album ‘I Will Wait’. That’s not a disadvantage though, because maybe I can provide a different view on the songs, not seeing them as remixes or rendition, but simply as songs. The first reach into ‘Queue’ is made with ‘University’ which for almost its entire duration ambient. It’s ambient with a singular depth, like you can almost touch it. The second part is marked with stuttering and overlapping beats of a varying signature. ‘Frigid’ comes off a little more structured, reminiscent of early industrial sound dipped into an ethereal current of melodies. ‘By Design’ after a bit of bass thumbing sets the machines in motion with a complicated array of cogs where hardly seems to be any place for melodies. It’s those though, getting the upper hand time and again, drowning the machinery in emotion. ‘OTT’ brings to the front the love for 80s styled melodies in the vein of early synth pop. Even the beats remain rather light-footed most of the time until some real heavy patterns are being dug up.

The last album’s title track is being looked at from to quite different angles on ‘Queue’ actually: The emotional and  the technical! The dwells on crystalline piano, large amounts of synth layers and reverb-drenched beats while the other one exhibits quite a minimalist approach, putting mechanical patterns to the front pushing back the comfort and the warmth from before. ‘One Three Two’ also is minimalist in the way that the structure doesn’t alter too much over its duration yet the atmosphere is that much compelling you’re starting to wish that song would go on for a few more minutes. ‘Nothing Will Happen Tomorrow’ tops it all for me. The piano, the guitars, the ambience; it’s all creating a depth second to none and I think it was a wise choice to place it at the tracklist’s end as the icing on the cake. ‘Queue’ holds a wide range of styles’ for those open to it and here’s hoping it won’t be recognized as a collection of remixes. It easily passes for a regular album.
