Album Review

I skipped the Tympanik debut of ANKLEBITER's 'I Will Wait' and jumped on the wagon shortly after the remix album 'Queue' hit the shops in 2011. Shame on me for showing up so late! Learned later that I really missed something Works on the next full-length event were happening in the background over a period of 2 years. The result is called 'Raintree' and is out for about a month now. The opening 'Homonymic' has you delve into an entirely different world. Kind of like entering a space where all your troubles have become melodies with a majesty to it that counterparts these feelings completely! 'Nested' rises from a simple, beautifully orchestrated piano lead-in with constant humming in the background. It's taking a while before the track hits you full force on a bed of intricate, heavy beats guitar textures and noise elements. 'When Your Ghosts Outnumber Your Living' has been known before the album's release by a video clip you shouldn't miss out on. Speaking about the track, it sort of gazes inwards to what we bury deep inside of us, everything we do not want the world to see. All the demons that keep haunting you!

It's sometimes that hose make your life a living hell. 'Clever Drunk' phases in on a current of ringing melodies, varying in in intensity and noise factor. When the rhythm kicks in you may feel the need to nod your head to it and I suggest you give in to it. 'The Lazy Pioneers' has a slight avant-garde touch to it with the improvised violin sections that tie in seamlessly with the electronic elements. There's rays of light bleeding through the blinds. The uplifting part of melancholy is at the track's core so to speak. Atmosphere is everything on an ANKLEBITER song. On 'Feature Creep, a collaboration with ERODE, there's also element of destruction involved, primarily with the incorporation of rough, distorted patterns like a punch in your face. On the other hand you find a lot of organic stuff in there with the slightly rockier guitar incursions and acoustic sounding drums. If you're amongst the people who value a sophisticated rhythm base just as much as the atmosphere 'The Best People' is the song you should listen to very attentively through your headphones. It's just amazing of how many bits and pieces this thing was constructed from.

'Short Pig' brings on soft melodies like washes over an edgy soundscape. If you close your eyes, listening through this one you might get the impression of a storm clouds gathering above a mountain range. I'm saying this straight ahead. 'Colorado Recursion' is nothing short of brilliant. With that song playing, you're instantly feeling yourself walking through the woods at sunset on a clear autumn day. IF this is an indicator of what's coming off a collaboration between c.db.sn and ANKLEBITER I'm hoping they will be doing an EP together some time in the future. Even though the base of 'Illegal in February' is not your average 4/4 beat it is still danceable. That certainly takes a little skill, that is, keeping the balance between those two sides of the road. THE OO-RAY returns for a second guest appearance after 'The Lazy Pioneers' on the album's last chapter 'Raintree', a beautiful ending to a beautiful album which I think must be counted amongst the most versatile collection Tanner Volz has produced under that moniker up to now.
