Album Review

And out of nowhere, CONSFEARACY suddenly pops up as a blip on the metal radar. Some may find CONSFEARACY’s sound most recognizable due to the lead vocals, which are performed by Brian O’ Connor formerly of VICIOUS RUMORS, but there are a host of other talented musicians within the group. Along with O’Connor is fellow VICIOUS RUMORS guitarist, Ira Black, along with Fabian Schwarz also helping on that front, bass duties performed by Guenter Auschrat o f THE NEW BLACK, and drums performed by Timo Weis. Collectively, each musician puts forth an influence into CONSFEARACY that is a huge mix of metal genres, from heavy to thrash to power to progressive. Whatever THE NEW BLACK or VICIOUS RUMORS sounds like today, CONSFEARACY is striving to make their own sound something completely new so fans of their former work can have a whole new experience to enjoy.

The music of the S/T album is mostly rooted in the heavy metal style; full of the right chugs and rhythms mixed with solos in the vein of old school music like DIO and maybe a bit of SLAYER (after all, it is possible the band took their group title from the song off of the ‘Christ Illusion’ album). However, layered within are numerous intricate melodies, such as the acoustic parts of ‘Dying To Kill’ which also feature thick rhythms that hit hard and fast, almost along the lines of melodic death metal. Others like ‘Pain Infantry’ feature a bit more groove to them, but also don’t exactly feature the best lyrics when it comes to the chorus, as they can tend to repeat itself. On ‘Unbreakable’, O’Connor and crew go for more of a death-thrash outlet with a gritty sound that slashes along and a grating chorus which really puts and emphasis on the heavy metal parts. The only track that really features any traces of power metal is ‘Ritual Sacrifice’, due to the higher use of solos and certain vocal tones. But even then the song keeps a raw tone that is much heavier than anything VICIOUS RUMORS would really create.

Overall, one could say that CONSFEARACY are a much darker outlet compared to any of the members’ other works. It is certainly heavier and goes more for catchy, hard riffs than melodic glory, but there are a few moments in there, such as the solos on ‘Ritual Sacrifice’. Fans should be really be excited for this though because it breaks away from anything these other artists do while still retaining a semi-rooted style. It’s not like these guys suddenly decided to go do a black metal album and go completely off the map, but they push the boundaries pretty close with some of these songs. The results should be intriguing.
