Album Review

I have a feeling that the village in Northwest Bavaria these guys came from was awfully quiet and boring - this album is the exact opposite of those descriptions - an anathema to them. ILLECTRONIC ROCK bangs out an eclectic and energetic smorgasbord of styles, it’s more a question which is not included than which one is. The one that jumps out at me is the Glam rock undercurrent, not over the top theatrical; it punctuates and twists the music with irony with a cool measure. Robert Schwarze’s vocals certainly can take on the occasional overacting and overstressing, it either irritates or pleases.

‘Personal Bitch’ is one of the more melodic pieces, easily combining rock, metal and punk and is a catchy number with the unflinching “in your face” edge. The album-titled ‘Sad Movie Scene’ disturbs you just in the right way. It’s an emotional thunder in a slow motion, if this was a movie it’d probably be of the David Cronenberg ilk. The vocals exploding at the end as flames out of the crushed car close it fittingly. ‘On My Tomb’ is atmospheric, disquieting, the hook really gets into you and prods you to hum along. The twelfth track ‘The End’ is LINKIN PARK industrialised and glam’ed up. With some other, punker tracks with Nu Metal shots scrambled with a bit of Industrial salt makes me think that it’s mostly the young & early 20’s audience that is the crux in the demography of their fans but that by no means indicates that if you are older that it cannot be right up your street too.

There’s pathos of emotions, and the energy is cathartic enough to let go off some demons. ‘Heart & Soulshaker’ starts softly, the strumming guitar guides the voice though the last, moody and atmospheric song. After all the angst and aggro, the lament of regret settles you down with tender wistfulness, imploring for another chance. It’s a very beautiful song to end this with. Whilst they prepared you at the beginning to “listen and cry or listen and die” (‘No Sorrow’) and prodded all your emotional nooks and crannies and shook you about to get it all out, at the exit they implore you to touch their soul and hold their hand for the good bye. I certainly enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster, pure energy and the blades of irony working through it. It’s an album to put on in the morning or any other sluggish time to kick you out of the funk and get you going.
