Album Review
HELGI JÓNSSON from Reykjavik spent eight years at first studying and working with different bands in Europe, in which time his first solo album ‘Glóandi’ was released (2005). After he moved back to Iceland, second album ‘For the rest of my Childhood’ came out in 2009. As he set out to work on an EP, the initial three songs grew into seven tracks and created a forthcoming short album ‘Blindfolded’. Unsurprisingly he toured with SIGUR RÓS, TEITUR, etc. He’s also lent his hand, either playing instruments or with song-writing for DZIHAN & KAMIEN, DAMIEN RICE, ANE BRUN, the already mentioned SIGUR RÓS and many others.
The album starts with more alternative rock and quietens down, from the post-folk-sounding acoustic tracks to the more slowly, atmospheric and even experimental, moody songs at the end. The first, ‘Make Me Fall’, would be probably the most radio-friendly song, it’s a solid track with JÓNSSON’s vocal intense and creating the mood more than the instruments here, which is a contrast to following tracks again - from the second song, ‘Aurora’, on the instruments are more prominent and JÓNSSON’s voice quieter, soft and persistently good. The instrumentation confirms his skilful and sensitive approach also, the most outstanding guitar and piano in most songs comes to be accompanied by subtle strings in ‘Wild hearts run out of time’, an emotive song with wonderful lyrics and one of the best songs of the album.
This album is one to relax to or dream with, and a good album that grows on you quietly, but surely.
