After the end of the well-known Finnish Gothic / Doom Metal band SENTENCED, it took drummer Vesa Ranta a while to overcome a creative and musical blockade. Yet, having found fitting members, only one year after the establishment, the band puts out their first full-length record. The first single already appeared to be a big success in their home-country, Finland. Somehow, if you read that a band is related to SENTENCED, you will always expect them to sound alike or to have a similar sounding singer. Having overcome this sort of mistake, you soon realize that THE MAN-EATING TREE also possesses their very unique and special sound, remarking a suitable soundtrack for the upcoming season of autumn.
Already the opener, ‘Lathing A New Man’ pinpoints the direction, towards which ‘Vine’ will veer: melodic, atmospheric elements combined with a charismatic voice and heavier elements. ‘The White Plateau’ provides a softer but very emotional and moving song, which also contains of a powerful and somehow catchy chorus. Nice guitar work is included and the keyboards also add their part to create a special feeling. The third piece, ‘This Longitude of Sleep’, invites to let one’s mind slip away and drown in dreams. Singer Tuomas really proves the variety of his voice, being able to cope with stronger as well as softer movements.
‘King of July’ is more straight-forward, yet without losing the atmospheric and melodic attitude. In contrast to this, ‘Of Birth For Passing’ is again a slower song, dominated by the at times crying vocals and a keyboard-driven background melody. The album continues in that manner, serving quality songs. ‘Vine’ is really a felicitous debut record to establish the band in the music business.
