Album Review

SORT BY TITLE’s first EP, ‘Independent Process’, is a very different experience for those who got a chance to sample their demo back from 2008. Abandoning their original punk rock outlet, the group aimed for a more melodic Metalcore / Hardcore based sound with some subtle electronic influences. Right from the start with ‘Into The Depths’, fans can hear traces that range from ALL THAT REMAINS to AUGUST BURNS RED with the mix of pummelling riffs and subtle melodies worked in between. The biggest surprise on this track are additional female vocals of Martina Sandstrom, which really helps round out the song altogether. She may not have the best voice in the world, but compared to the tracks ‘Betrayed By The Sun’ and ‘Revelation Sign’, ‘Into The Depths’ sounds much more dynamic and open compared to slightly limited scope of the other tracks, which have more of the typical Metalcore tinge to them by involving only screaming with rare appearances of clean vocals. However, SORT BY TITLE does try to spice things up with a fuzzier atmosphere through industrial elements such as on ‘Revelation Sign’ which does help with mediocrity of the music altogether.

‘Insanity’ shows the strongest elements of industrial influence, adding in a few remix elements to make it seem like there is a bit of MNEMIC involved. The melodic death metal elements here show a possible new direction for the group while also establishing the band’s ability to create a cushion of atmosphere without the help of guest vocalists to help make the music more likeable. ‘Stuck On A Curb’ draw back to the more punk rock / Hardcore roots, and includes guest vocals from Fred Hunger, a relative unknown in the metal world, but his vocals are difficult to distinguish from that of Henning’s from SORT BY TITLE, so the impact isn’t as great. Still, whether including guests or not, SORT BY TITLE prove their worth by expanding their horizons with this debut EP and show further promise to expand even more in the future. Those who enjoy modern Metalcore or even melodic death metal will probably find this group very satisfying considering it stays away from the conventional trends of the usual “harsh vocals/ clean chorus” style that so many bands have fallen to trying to gain as much attention as possible, but becoming more obscure amongst each other.
