Just six months on from their eponymous debut EP, Goth art-rockers Partly Faithful fire a second reverb-soaked salvo into the abyss. While the mists of Goth convention still hang heavy and permeate every aspect of the songwriting and production, there’s a clear sense of evolution here. ‘Needles’ is a spiky post-punk affair with more than a hint of PiL about it, both in the thumping bass and the sneering, Lydonesque vocal delivery. In contrast, there’s a soaring, almost post-rock feel to the elegantly theatrical ‘The Worm Within’, which is played in waltz-time.
‘So Happy’ is a classic piece of bleak gothic brooding, a slow-burning number that runs past the five and a half minute mark, beginning quietly and building to a squall of reverb-soaked guitar. Overall, it’s an accomplished set that really expands on the standard Goth template, and builds significantly on the foundations laid by their previous EP. More than simply promising, ‘The Beehive’ actually delivers.
