EP Review

The EP seems to have become a format of choice, especially for new bands, in recent years. Perhaps because it requires less studio time than a full album, or perhaps it’s simply because it affords a band the opportunity to showcase their wares more broadly than a single, and to get the best material from the live set down and available as quickly as possible to build a fan-base. Whatever the reason, I’m all in favour. PARTLY FAITHFUL’s eponymous effort is a good advert for the format, containing four tracks of a guitar-driven Goth, post-punk persuasion. This shouldn’t be entirely surprising: the band have, after all, emerged from the ashes of gothic post-punkers SCREAMING BANSHEE AIRCREW, who built themselves a respectable reputation and performed alongside the likes of Wayne Hussey and THE MARCH VIOLETS as well as COLD IN BERLIN and SKELETAL FAMILY.

A spindly lead guitar twists and turns and spirals over loping drums and a strolling bass on ‘Partly Faithful’, and it sets the tone and mood for the EP as a whole. ’Just Fine’ is driving and urgent, the sociopolitical commentary of the lyrics delivered with something of a nod to Jello Biafra in the vocal performance. ‘Strange Disease’ is short, sleazy and to the point, before the six-minute epic ‘Your Song’ brings a change of tone and tempo to sweep the set to a majestic and measured conclusion. It’s a solid debut and a clear statement of intent that sets out PARTLY FAITHFUL’s stall as purveyors of old-school cool.
