Album Review

SEPTEMBER MOURNING is a project conceived by Emily Lazar and Marc Silvestri, the band performed alongside MARYLIN MANSON, THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE, I AM GHOST, HANZEL UND GRETYL etc. The project is introduced as “the creation of a universe. It is not a band, it is a story... a fantasy with a musical element intertwined within its world. The story follows a girl named September with a split soul. Able to walk in the world of the living and the world of the dead, September has the ability to harness Death and use it to change the fate of others.” Its musical incarnation mixes Metal, Pop and electronic elements into the Hard Rock overcoat. If you were to guess only from the music without the band’s introduction what the character of ‘September’ is like, well, you get the troubled, kick ass and yet vulnerable heroine for sure. The introducing song ‘Go For The Throat’ is a vicious song, the screams boil your blood in a good measure and show Lazar’s vocal to be able to be versatile as she slips into clean vocals that have only a slight suggestion of the ferocious side she displays with the other. A dramatic and thoroughly modern song.

‘A Place To Call Your Own’ somehow makes me think of Nu Metal (LINKIN PARK) tradition, however, superbly transformed. ‘Always’ gets into showing the vulnerable side, has a wonderful narrative, and even if I said vulnerable – that is by no means to say fragile. Intense song too. Another song to hand-pick from the album is ‘Crimson Skies’ – a layered song that shows different sides through its duration with some great guitar work and evocative vocals. It comes quite clear throughout that Emily Lazar is the greatest asset of this project – it begs to rate this by one point up simply on the power of her vocal and presence.  The music is great, varied and interesting, but her vocal and her charismatic approach really make it stand out and lend it the prevailing characteristic – intense, the other being quite creative. Wonderful album that should not be missed out on if at least to check it out and certainly something you might want to see live.
