EP Review

‘Embers’ is the new four-track EP from UK gothic-rock dark-romanticists RED SUN REVIVAL, and it certainly doesn’t represent any treading water between albums. Lead song ‘Mistakes’ for example, is possibly their best song yet, a gracefully mournful dusky gallop kept pacey and dramatic by a violin riff that will linger in your mind long after the song has ended. There’s tension and beauty here, tightly wound yet somehow also light of touch, this song already earning its place as a thrilling centre-piece to their live set.

‘Broken’ is similarly rich, the production lush and expansive, singer Rob Leydon delivering the line “Are you the same, or are you broken?”, with such utter world-weariness you don’t know whether to pass him some tissues or pour him a very large drink. A piano strokes ‘Surrender’ into life, before chiming guitars and burbling bass join in, the vocals almost whispered at times, coaxing the melody along. It’s bleak. But in a good way. And finally ‘Embers’, which at six and a half minutes long, is more than happy to unfold itself dreamily into your cranium. It twists and turns in its many layers, the vocals repeating a simple melodic line like a mantra, the whole thing draped in a strangely uplifting gothic shroud.

If this is what lies ahead for RED SUN REVIVAL then the future is darkly rosy. There’s an added sophistication and confidence to the song-writing here, and the care and attention that has gone into what could have been ‘just’ an EP shows they are serious about their craft, and urging us to join them along the way. An important release for 2014.
