Album Review

SOULBURN is a Dutch Death Metal band, who were formed in 1996 and released their debut ‘Feeding on Angels’ in 1998, but were put to rest afterwards in favour of all members reuniting in ASPHYX. In 2013, SOULBURN’s hold was ended and 2014 saw the release of their second album ‘The Suffocating Darkness’. On ‘The Suffocating Darkness’, SOULBURN provide an energetic form of Old School Death Metal, which mostly includes straight-forward, brutal and fast songs such as ‘The Mirror Void’, ‘Wielding Death’, but also includes slower or grooving interludes such as in ‘Absinthesis’. ‘Hymn of The Forsaken’ experiments, in a successful and interesting way, with clean but dark, almost-haunted vocals and thus adds another, slightly occult touch to the band’s style. It is, however, difficult to name certain songs as outstanding, since the album convinces in its entirety and is thus highly recommended for any fan of Old School Death Metal and the already-mentioned ASPHYX.
