Album Review

SILVERLANE already came to life in 1995, initiated by the future SUBWAY TO SALLY drummer Simon Michael to get first practice in mutual composing. The self-produced debut ‘Legends of Safar’ (2005) could be sold a 1,000 times without any promotion. Regardless of being busy with SUBWAY TO SALLY, Michael doesn’t end SILVERLANE at all. Together with singer Ecki and guitarist Uli Holzheimer, he’s simultaneously working on the follow-up ‘My Inner Demon’, which is now due for a release on 20th February 2009.

The album opener ‘Wings of Eternity’ thrashes right away with a fair blast beat on which the symphonic elements and hard guitars seem to ride. So far so typical! Has been there in many different variations before but what makes SILVERANE so special is the powerful and convertible voice of Ecki Singer. After such a “brutal” musical opening, the following song ‘Miracle’ starts calmly with an emotive piano theme framed by a few strings and short time after builds into a pretty classic arrangement with straight-forward drums complemented by typically harsh metal riffs and a good solo. ‘The Flight of Icarus’, Greek mythology folks, the son of Daedalus, escaping from Crete with his father with the help of wings made of feathers and wax, he came too close to the sun eventually and had to pay the price. The track has a much more monumental feeling to it, utilizing a lot of strings and also chorals for the perfect mood.

A menacing mood takes hold in the title track crafted with gloomy piano clangs and corresponding string support while the rhythm slowly rolls forward. Towards the chorus, the dark veil lifts for one moment and gives room for a desperate sounding Ecki Singer. Besides that the 7 minutes opus comes up with a skilful twin riff about halfway through the song. Oriental melodies and additional percussions arise for ‘Kingdom of Sand’. Everything from the guitars to the trademark symphonic arrangements sprays that certain desert feeling with a little pinch of darkness. A sitar would have been a good idea too. ‘Slowly’, the song that’s closing the album is a genuine ballad and gets along without any additional rock instrumentation. Only emphatic piano lines and classical orchestral passages as well as sporadic drum beats surround Ecki’s voice.

For all you guys out there who’re into very melodic metal with symphonic support I can strongly recommend this one. Not that the arrangements would be extraordinary but Ecki’s voice is worth a listen definitely.
