Album Review

The FRAY was founded in 2002. Supported by local radio stations their song ‘Over My Head (Cable Car)’ and became one of the most played songs in Denver 2004. They signed a record deal with Epic Record sin 2004 and released their debut ‘How to Save a Life’ in September 2005. In 2006, they’ve been nominated for 2 Grammies in the categories “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals” (Over My Head (Cable Car)) und “Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals” (How to Save a Life). ‘The Fray’ which will be released on 20th February in Germany is their second album.

The album starts with ‘Syndicate’ which also introduces the trademark instrument to those who’re not so familiar with the sound of the guys: The piano! The emotive lines in combination with understated drumming and equal guitar work carry Slade’s soft yet powerful vocals. ‘You Found Me’ was chosen to be the first single. The intimate mood of its early parts is soon to be replaced by a much more monumental approach with all the instruments melting to one cohesive emotional flow which is making your hairs stand on end. It’s a sheer flood sadness that overcomes you when listening to ‘Enough for Now’ it’s within the deep lyrics and the instrumentation reflects it, whereas that wouldn’t be adequate. Not only it is reflecting it, it’s multiplying the intensity with its poignant strings, the grand piano, and the wonderfully brittle vocals of Slade. While it was sadness I felt on the previous one a subliminal feeling of longing takes control of me on ‘Where the Story Ends’ that has much more vivid drumming and is literally dominated by the soft piano parts.

‘The Fray’ is an amazingly emotional and atmospheric album with lots of little aural that are in my opinion living on the great, emotionally-charged interaction of Slade’s piano play and vocal performance. Music for the soul!
